Amazon invest in electromobility

Current and future laws are defining ever more stringent requirements for the approval of new vehicles. This has long since happened not only in private transport, but also in the logistics industry. Deutsche Post has therefore been converting its fleet to electric vehicles for some time. Now Amazon will apparently soon follow suit, because the US group has decided for the next five years ambitious goals plugged. The company announced, for example, that it intends to invest around one billion euros by 2027 to electrify its own fleet. To date, Amazon has around 3,000 zero-emission vehicles in Europe. This roughly corresponds to a volume of 100 million packages. However, the company is not disclosing any further information.

Amazon wants 10,000 electric vans by 2025

The investment volume of one billion euros should meanwhile make some new acquisitions possible. In the best-case scenario, for example, 10,000 small electric vans should go into service by 2025. At the same time, the US group relies on the local delivery of products via cargo bikes and footpaths. To this end, the company wants to set up additional parcel stations in 20 European cities. E-trucks, on the other hand, should transport parcels between large cities without producing any emissions. There are now quite a few providers of such vehicles. However, it is still unclear which company Amazon wants to work with.

Many manufacturers offer suitable transport solutions

However, two manufacturers could come into question. One would be Rivian, from which Amazon recently ordered 100,000 vans. In addition, the US group apparently wants to build an electronic fleet with Mercedes-Benz. For medium-haul routes, there are corresponding solutions from Volvo and soon from Tesla. Amazon in particular has a long lever in the logistics industry. Switching to fully electric vans could save a large amount of CO2 and make cities cleaner. Ultimately, however, it is also up to the legislator, who has already decided to phase out combustion engines.
