``2022 Tokyo Tech Ota Science Festa'' to be held for the first time in three years

On August 22nd, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Ota Ward Board of Education jointly held the "2022 Tokyo Tech Ota Science Festa" at the Applied Chemistry Laboratory on the 2nd floor of West Building 4, Ookayama Campus.

This event is an initiative based on a basic agreement between our university and Ota Ward as a part of fostering human resources who are engaged in cutting-edge research at science and technology universities. It has been held every year as an opportunity for children to fall in love with science, but 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to the corona disaster, and it was the first time in three years. This time, there were 412 applications from 3rd to 6th grade elementary school students in Ota Ward, and 72 people participated as a result of the lottery.

On the day of the event, three experiments were conducted under the theme of "Let's transform liquids through chemical reactions!" By reacting various compounds with water or purple cabbage extract, we observed that exothermic and endothermic reactions and color changes occurred. In the end, I made use of what I learned in the experiment to create an original cooling pack and an original bath additive that can be enjoyed at home.

During the experiment, the children enthusiastically answered questions from the lecturer, excitedly observed the chemical reaction that occurred in front of them, and enthusiastically talked to the lecturer.
