Fetter's work included the 1964 development of ergonomic descriptions of the human body that are both accurate and adaptable to different environments, and this resulted in the first 3D animated "wire-frame" figures. Such human figures became one of the most iconic images of the early history of computer graphics, and often were referred to as the "Boeing Man". Ivan Sutherland is considered by many to be the creator of Interactive Computer Graphics, and an internet pioneer. He worked at the Lincoln Laboratory at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1962, where he developed a program called Sketchpad I, which allowed the user to interact directly with the image on the screen. This was the first Graphical User Interface, and is considered one of the most influential computer programs ever written by an individual. Utah was a major center for computer animation in this period. The computer science faculty was founded by David Evans in 1965, and many of the basic techniques of 3D computer graphics were developed here in the early 1970s with ARPA funding (Advanced Research Projects Agency). Firmware usually is not changed by the end user of the personal computer. Most 2010s-era computers require users only to plug in the power supply, monitor, and other cables. A typical desktop computer consists of a computer case (or "tower"), a metal chassis that holds the power supply, motherboard, a storage device such as a hard disk drive or solid-state drive, and often an optical disc drive. Most towers have empty space where users can add additional components. External devices such as a computer monitor or visual display unit, keyboard, and a pointing device (mouse) are usually found in a personal computer. The motherboard connects all processor, memory and peripheral devices together. The RAM, graphics card and processor are in most cases mounted directly onto the motherboard. The central processing unit (microprocessor chip) plugs into a CPU socket, while the ram modules plug into corresponding ram sockets. Some motherboards have the video display adapter, sound and other peripherals integrated onto the motherboard, while others use expansion slots for graphics cards, network cards, or other I/O devices.
Under prior law, there was a partial exception to the recordkeeping requirement for computers. Namely, if you used a computer or computer peripheral (such as a printer) only for business and kept it at your business location, you did not have to comply with the listed property recordkeeping requirements. Effective 2018, there are no recordkeeping requirements for any business use of computers. To qualify for first-year bonus depreciation, property classified as listed property under the tax code must be used over 50% of the time for business. Because computers will no longer be classified as listed property (see above), you can use bonus depreciation to deduct computers used less than 50% of the time for business starting in 2018. Bonus depreciation allows you to deduct a substantial amount of the cost of an item used for business in the first year that you purchase it. For more information, see Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation Changes Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
