Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt lake in the world (10.582km2)
Salar de Uyuni is located in the Department of Potosi and Oruro, Bolivia southeast, near the top of the Andes, at an altitude of 3650 m.
Around 40,000 years ago, this lake is part of the Lake Michin, a large lake in prehistoric times. When dry, there are 2 remaining lakes, namely Lake PoopĆ³ and uru uru, and the 2nd largest salt desert, Salar de Coipasa and Salar de Uyuni.
Estimated, Salar de Uyuni contains 10 billion tons of salt, and less than about 25,000 tons of salt each year obtained. Every November, Salar de Uyuni into residential areas for the 3 species of flamingos in South America: flamingos chile, andes, and James. Salar de Uyuni is a popular tourist destination.
