After the exhibition, Bertie was dismantled, and "largely forgotten" as a novelty. Kates has said that he was working on so many projects at the same time that he had no energy to spare for preserving it, despite its significance. Nearly a year later on May 5, 1951, the Nimrod computer-created by engineering firm and nascent computer developer Ferranti-was presented at the Festival of Britain, and then showcased for three weeks in October at the Berlin Industrial Show before being dismantled. Using a panel of lights for its display, it was designed exclusively to play the game of Nim; moves were made by players pressing buttons which corresponded with the lights. Nimrod could play either the traditional or "reverse" form of the game. The machine was twelve feet wide, nine feet deep, and five feet tall. It was based on an earlier Nim-playing machine, "Nimatron", designed by Edward Condon and built by Westinghouse Electric in 1940 for display at the New York World's Fair.

He convinced Regis McKenna, a well-known public relations specialist for the semiconductor industry, to represent the company; he also secured an investment from Michael Markkula, a wealthy veteran of the Intel Corporation who became Apple’s largest shareholder and an influential member of Apple’s board of directors. The company became an instant success, particularly after Wozniak invented a disk controller that allowed the addition of a low-cost floppy disk drive that made information storage and retrieval fast and reliable. With room to store and manipulate data, the Apple II became the computer of choice for legions of amateur programmers. Most notably, in 1979 two Bostonians-Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston-introduced the first personal computer spreadsheet, VisiCalc, creating what would later be known as a “killer app” (application): a software program so useful that it propels hardware sales. While VisiCalc opened up the small-business and consumer market for the Apple II, another important early market was primary educational institutions. Apple’s profits and size grew at a historic rate: by 1980 the company netted over $100 million and had more than 1,000 employees.
The word “algorithm” seems to have taken on a huge significance in the last few years, in the media discourse about people’s fears of black boxes and manipulation. I find this very curious because when you learn computer science, algorithms are actually anything but black boxes. They’re very clear, step-by-step programs where you go from a problem to a detailed solution. Do you think that educating people about what algorithms are would be beneficial, and make us less scared of them? That’s a great point. Algorithms sound like something mysterious, but they’re not. They’re recipes, with a series of steps to go from an input to an output. It’s very simple, and there is nothing mysterious or malicious about that. If you’re going to learn computer science, or if you want to start programming, you should learn something about an algorithm at some point. And even the general public should know that there’s nothing crazy going on with algorithms, even though that word is being thrown around without much meaning attached to it.
